Role description
The Controller will lead all financial, accounting, and compliance functions and serve as a strategic business partner to the executive team. Reporting to the CFO this role blends strong financial oversight with hands-on knowledge of e-commerce operations and inventory management. This is an on-site position based in our office 4 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee month-end and year-end close processes
• Prepare and present GAAP-compliant financial statements, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow
• Maintain the chart of accounts, fixed asset schedules, depreciation, and inventory valuations
• Reconcile e-commerce platform sales, payment gateways, and inventory systems, experience using data from Shopify and other platforms.
• Monitor inventory metrics (e.g., SKUs, turnover rates, valuation per item) to ensure accurate reporting
• Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
• Provide variance analysis and financial modeling to support pricing, promotions, and product launches
• Establish and maintain strong internal controls for inventory, accounting procedures, and reporting accuracy
• Manage tax compliance, including multi-state sales tax, and coordinate with external auditors
• Partner with operations, marketing, and logistics teams to translate financial insights into actionable strategies
• Lead and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred
• 5–8+ years of progressive accounting or controller experience (retail, e-commerce, or consumer goods strongly preferred)
• Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite); e-commerce integration experience strongly preferred
• Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication abilities
• Detail-oriented, ethical, and proactive problem solver
