About the Role
KORE1, a nationwide provider of staffing and recruiting solutions, is seeking a Director of Engineering (Backend & Data) to lead innovation across our retail and e-commerce platforms. You’ll drive the strategy and execution of scalable backend systems, enterprise data management, and cloud-native architecture on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Experience in the apparel retail industry and with Shopify is a strong plus.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
• Lead and scale a high-performing team of backend and data engineers.
• Partner with business stakeholders to define and execute a data lake roadmap.
• Foster an engineering culture focused on performance, scalability, and continuous improvement.
Backend Engineering & Cloud Architecture
• Architect and maintain secure, scalable microservices and APIs on GCP.
• Drive best practices in DevOps, CI/CD, observability, and infrastructure automation.
• Build and optimize backend platforms powering retail operations and digital experiences.
Enterprise Data
• Own the architecture and evolution of enterprise data systems—data lakes, ETL pipelines, real-time processing, and analytics.
• Ensure robust data governance, privacy, and security.
Retail & E-Commerce Technology
• Oversee backend integrations with Shopify, ERP, POS, and customer systems.
• Guide development of APIs and data flows supporting headless commerce and omnichannel retail.
Qualifications
• 8+ years in software engineering, with at least 2 years in a director or senior leadership role.
• Deep expertise in backend development and cloud-native architecture on GCP (BigQuery, Vertex AI, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, etc.).
• Proven success building and scaling enterprise data systems.
• Strong foundation in microservices, APIs, and event-driven architecture.
• Shopify/retail technology experience strongly preferred.
• Exceptional people management and communication skills.
Compensation
$200,000 – $220,000 DOE plus benefits.
