Job Title: Engineering Manager (50-60% hands on)
Job Type: Permanent

I am looking for a Engineering Manager Strong experience in Ruby on Rails to join a key client of mine in London. This is suited towards a hands on Developer who has experience as a Leader previously. You will be managing a team of 2 Software Engineers, 2 Frontend Engineers and 2 offshore Software Engineers.
Job Accountabilities
• Recruit and manage a team of software engineers (and QA engineers if required), overseeing the development and implementation of high-quality code within agreed timelines.
• Build and maintain systems that power client journey and business workflows
• Manage and review team performance, compensation, and personal development
• Provide insightful recommendations for future architectural solutions and software cost management
• Create and manage technical project documentation
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, embracing change, and striving for excellence
• Conduct regular code reviews to ensure the team's output aligns with the company's coding standards and principles
• Drive the pace of development according to business needs through management of the pipeline and efficient use of resources
• Continuously improve our testing infrastructure and operations tools
• Maintain existing systems and build in observability
• Release new features using feature flagging and A/B testing
• Collaborate effectively with stakeholders to understand their needs and clients’ needs to develop our tools with a continuous feedback loop
• Own features from concept all the way through to production
• Work with other members of the team to find and resolve bottlenecks
Compensation
• Base salary: around ~£110,000
Technical Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
• Ruby on Rails expert: Must have significant hands-on experience with Ruby and also active experience within the last 2 years
• AWS experience: Familiarity with AWS infrastructure and services
• Comfortable being hands-on with code daily while also operating at a strategic level
Leadership Experience
• At least 3–5+ years of experience managing engineering teams (small teams preferred)
• Proven experience in managing underperformance and driving team improvement
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills – able to work closely with product, design, and non-technical stakeholders
Business & Industry Fit

• Comfortable working in a non-technical organisation
