Role description
Who We Are
Cline is an open-source AI coding agent for VS Code, engineered to deliver the most powerful and transparent agentic coding experience. Going far beyond simple code generation, Cline acts as a true collaborator: it reads your codebase for context, transparently accesses any AI model you choose (from Claude to GPT to local options), executes terminal commands, interacts with browsers, and utilizes a growing ecosystem of tools via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This empowers developers to tackle complex engineering challenges with an AI partner that reads files, explores code, asks clarifying questions, and provides radical visibility into every action—all while keeping you firmly in control. With over two million installs and a thriving open-source community, Cline is how the world's best developers ship faster, smarter, and with complete confidence in their AI tools.
What We Are Looking For
As our first Growth Marketing hire, you will architect, execute and refine a data‑driven growth strategy. This role sits at the intersection of marketing, product, and community: you will lead paid and lifecycle marketing, run a high‑velocity growth lab, and build a content and community moat to engage developers. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to align messaging and optimize developer journeys.
Responsibilities
• Own and execute Cline’s Growth Marketing strategy, encompassing developer awareness, OSS downloads, user acquisition, activation, MAU, and monetization through both PLG and PLS
• Paid & Performance Marketing. Own paid channels end‑to‑end (search, social, programmatic); plan, launch and optimize campaigns, ensuring measurable results and ROI.
• Own website optimizations and content development to increase organic traffic, improve user journeys, and boost conversion rates for sign-ups and MQLs.
• Lifecycle & Email Marketing. Develop personalized nurture programs that move developers through activation, engagement and retention.
• Growth Experimentation. Design and run a high‑velocity “growth lab” to test hypotheses across paid, organic, content, and community channels. Formulate clear experiments, measure results, and double‑down on what works.
• Search & Discoverability. Lead organic search strategy and explore GenAI search optimization to ensure our product ranks highly and is cited within AI‑driven search experiences.
• Analytics & Reporting. Build robust tech stack, track end-to-end user journey, report on performance forecast pipeline and share insights back to the team.
• Cross‑Functional Collaboration. Partner with dev rel, product and engineering to align on messaging, developer personas, and roadmap priorities.
Qualifications
• Growth & Demand Generation Experience. 5+ years in growth marketing or demand generation, ideally focused on B2B SaaS or developer tools; A track record of achieving growth targets through both self-service and sales-assisted channels.
• Data‑Driven & Experimental Mindset. Comfortable with ambiguity; you design experiments, test hypotheses, and validate concepts quickly.
• Analytical Acumen. Proficient with analytics tools; able to extract insights from data to inform strategy and optimize campaigns.
• Developer & AI Savvy. Familiarity with the developer ecosystem, open‑source communities, and AI/ML concepts; ability to translate technical features into compelling narratives.
• Excellent Communication. Strong written and verbal skills; able to convey clear, persuasive messages to developers and collaborate across distributed teams.
• Self‑Starter. Comfortable working autonomously in a fast‑paced startup environment; thrives on freedom, ownership and learning.
• Bonus: Experience coding or understanding LLM‑based tools; prior involvement in open‑source communities; expertise with marketing tech (GA, Segment, Customer.io, SQL).
