Job Overview: The Art Director is ultimately responsible for guiding creative direction and executing across catalogs, direct mail, in-store signage, social media, emails, and web design ensuring work is engaging, on-brand, and drives business results. The role is also responsible for shaping the look and feel of photo shoots and leading the creative team to deliver polished, impactful campaigns that resonate with our customers.
The Art Director reports directly into the Creative Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Act as a TPS brand ambassador and thought leader, pushing the creative vision forward while staying true to our brand DNA.
• Oversee all design aspects of The Paper Store brand, ensuring assets are inspiring, on-brand, and aligned with sales objectives.
• Bring a discerning eye for typography, layout, photo editing, and storytelling with a strong fashion/editorial sensibility.
• Concept, design, and execute catalogs, from photography vignette planning to layouts, text treatments, and pre-press work.
• Partner with Marketing, Merchandising, and Buying teams to deliver compelling creative concepts that highlight merchandise and elevate brand presence.
• Collaborate with the VP of Marketing on fresh brand aesthetics and innovative campaign looks for TPS and its sub-brands.
• Lead and inspire a growing team of Graphic and Web Designers, providing mentorship, feedback, and development to ensure cutting-edge, relevant creative.
• Art direct photo shoots with a progressive vision and train design/photography staff to execute high-quality visuals that keep the brand ahead of trends.
• Manage budgets, timelines, and resources to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and at the highest standard.
• Champion an environment of curiosity, experimentation, and innovation—encouraging smart risk-taking and fresh ideas.
• Establish processes and standards that ensure both creative excellence and operational efficiency.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by direct supervisor and senior leadership.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• 6+ years of experience in Graphic Design and Creative Direction.
• Candidates must submit a portfolio of relevant design work to be considered for this position.
• At least 3-5 years of experience leading others, specifically proven success leading creative teams and delivering innovative campaigns in retail, fashion, or lifestyle brands.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in catalog, digital, and omni-channel design.
• Experience art directing photo shoots with a modern, editorial sensibility.
• Proactive, collaborative leader with the ability to inspire and energize teams.
• Ability to balance bold creativity with business goals and deadlines.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, including experience presenting to Executives.
• Technical mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator); knowledge of digital tools and trends a plus.
• Experience in ecommerce or digital-first campaigns strongly preferred.
• Ability to be flexible and work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
• Ability to work 4+ days/week at the Corporate Office in Acton, MA.
