Role description
Position Summary
The Director of eCommerce Engineering will lead the engineering efforts behind our Shopify Plus and Recharge-powered eCommerce experience. This role is ideal for a senior-level developer who has transitioned into technical leadershipβsomeone who can still write high-quality code while guiding both internal and external engineering partners.
You will be responsible for front-end and back-end development, architecture, and performance, bringing the vision of our growth, product, and customer experience teams to life. This role is strictly focused on engineering and does not include IT-related responsibilities (e.g., device management, internal systems, help desk support).
Key Responsibilities
Shopify + Recharge Engineering:
β’ Architect and build scalable, high-performance Shopify Plus storefronts using custom Liquid, Hydrogen, React, and Next.js
β’ Lead development of Recharge subscription flows, API-based enhancements, and checkout customizations
β’ Own and evolve our eCommerce codebase, ensuring clean, maintainable code and version control best practices
β’ Drive continuous optimization across site speed, SEO, and mobile responsiveness
Technical Project Ownership:
β’ Translate cross-functional goals into clear technical requirements and timelines
β’ Collaborate with growth, retention, and CX teams to ship features that boost conversion, LTV, and customer satisfaction
β’ Implement and maintain pixel/event tracking infrastructure for analytics and marketing teams (GA4, Meta, etc.)
β’ Guide third-party dev agencies and freelance engineers to ensure timely, high-quality delivery
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
β’ Serve as the technical expert for projects involving site experience, retention features, and integrations with third-party tools (Klaviyo, Loop Returns, Zendesk, Postscript, etc.)
β’ Partner with Product and Marketing on A/B testing, landing page builds, and funnel experimentation
β’ Ensure smooth data flow and performance visibility from ad click to checkout to subscription renewal
Education & Experience:
β’ 10+ years of hands-on experience as a front-end or full-stack developer
β’ 7+ years of experience working specifically in Shopify Plus and Recharge environments
β’ Proven experience owning Shopify storefront builds end-to-end, including headless implementations
β’ Strong track record of cross-functional collaboration in DTC or eCommerce companies
Skills & Abilities:
β’ Proficient in Liquid, JavaScript (React/Next.js), HTML/CSS, and Git
β’ Skilled in working with Shopify APIs, Recharge APIs, and custom app integrations
β’ Strong knowledge of pixel architecture, event tracking, and tagging frameworks (GA4, Meta, TikTok)
β’ Comfortable operating in a high-growth, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
β’ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
β’ Passion for clean code, fast sites, happy customers, and results-driven engineering
This is a remote position.
