Role description
Role: Controller
Location: London, United Kingdom
Reporting to: Director of Finance
Company
Driving innovation between fashion and technology, FINESSE is pioneering a new paradigm within the fashion industry that is more efficient, faster and more sustainable. Similarly to how a hedge fund would analyze stock performance and hedge its bets, FINESSE utilizes advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence on social & proprietary data to determine what styles will be trending next and the exact quantity to produce. Leading an era of predictive fashion, FINESSE’s algorithmic underpinnings allow for the creation of best-in-class products brought to market faster than the competition and done so more affordably and ethically. Instead of overproducing garments by the tonnes and coating the industry in garments no one ever asked for, FINESSE produces what is wanted, when it is wanted, eliminating the fashion industry’s footprint as the second largest polluter in the world.
About Us
Nestled between the right and left brain, the FINESSE team includes former US Olympians, Academy Award-shortlisted artists, and scientists who’ve conducted research under Nobel Prize winners. The FINESSE culture is one of dreamers & doers. We envision the next age of fashion & consumer—and then implement it, always thinking creatively, innovatively, and collaboratively to create change. We are energetic, highly creative, and hungry for impact that is both revolutionizing and ethical.
Roles & Responsibilities
As Finance Controller, you’ll own our core finance operations, reporting, and controls while helping to architect the systems and processes that power a modern, global finance function. This role blends technical financial control with FP&A, automation, and team leadership — ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment and wants to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the company.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Control & Accounting
• Own and operate the full-cycle accounting process including GL, AR/AP, payroll, intercompany, and tax.
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close, ensuring timely and accurate consolidation across all entities.
• Establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and audit readiness.
FP&A & Strategic Reporting
• Lead monthly management reporting including P&L, cash flow, and balance sheet analysis.
• Partner with founders and department heads to build annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and long-term plans.
• Track and analyze key financial KPIs (e.g., gross margin, CAC, LTV, contribution margin, inventory turnover).
• Provide scenario modeling and ad hoc analysis to support decision-making on pricing, inventory, and growth investments.
Automation & Systems
• Identify and implement process automation tools to improve accuracy, speed, and scalability of finance operations.
• Champion a finance tech stack that supports multi-entity, multi-currency, and high-volume e-commerce operations.
Cross-Functional Business Partnering
• Collaborate with Ops, Marketing, and Product teams to align finance with inventory planning, demand forecasting, and performance marketing.
• Support supply chain and logistics cost analysis, particularly across multiple warehouses and fulfillment models.
• Drive cost control and operational efficiency via robust reporting and insight.
Professional Qualifications
• 6–10 years in finance roles, ideally in high-growth e-commerce, retail, or DTC.
• Strong accounting background (ACA/ACCA/CPA preferred) with technical command of financial controls.
• Proven experience in FP&A, including budgeting, forecasting, and performance tracking.
• Deep understanding of e-commerce business models and unit economics.
• Track record of building or improving finance functions, especially in tech-forward, international businesses.
Personal Characteristics
• Systems thinker who loves clean, scalable processes.
• Analytical but pragmatic — able to zoom into the detail and up to the strategy.
• Comfortable in a high-change, low-structure environment.
• Proactive communicator and problem solver who builds strong cross-functional relationships.
