Head of Shopify Engineering
Elva is seeking a Head Shopify Engineering to lead our growing Shopify Plus practice. In this role, you will tackle complex technical challenges across a wide range of projects, overseeing implementation from discovery through launch and post-launch. You will guide architecture, solutions design, and release management while ensuring technical excellence at every stage of the SDLC.
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Shopify Plus best practices, a strong grasp of modern development processes, and proven experience leading cross-functional teams. You will manage and mentor engineers and technical leads, drive innovation in tooling and processes, and provide strategic technical guidance across the organization. Partnering with sales, operations, and marketing, you will help position Elva’s Shopify capabilities in the market and deliver scalable, future-proof solutions for our clients.
Core Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Strategy
• Provide direction and mentorship to engineers and technical leads through regular 1:1s, coaching, and skills development.
• Lead architectural decision-making, technical approach definition, and complex feature development for Shopify Plus projects.
• Maintain deep expertise in Shopify’s roadmap, APIs, Checkout Extensibility, and ecosystem trends, bringing insights into team planning and client strategy.
• Oversee internal tooling and framework initiatives to improve developer productivity, release management, and multi-store/multi-tenant environments.
• Ensure all technical solutions align with best practices, scalability requirements, and security standards.
• Partner with Directors and team members to iterate and improve internal SDLC, delivery processes, and technical frameworks.
Delivery & Project Oversight
• Lead and contribute to project discovery sessions, technical audits, and solution design for both new and existing clients.
• Prepare accurate estimates, solution proposals, and technical documentation for sales and delivery teams.
• Oversee sprint planning, backlog management, and PR reviews, ensuring delivery consistency across accounts.
• Serve as release manager, managing branching/versioning, deployments, and risk mitigation.
• Support project teams with peer programming, code reviews, and technical problem-solving.
• Collaborate with PMs to ensure projects run efficiently through process alignment and team accountability.
Talent & Team Development
• Onboard and coach new developers into company culture, frameworks, and delivery standards.
• Support technical resourcing decisions based on skills, project needs, and career growth opportunities.
• Maintain a high-performing, motivated, and collaborative engineering team environment.
• Partner with HR to recruit top Shopify development talent.
Collaboration & Sales Enablement
• Act as technical lead in pre-sales activities, including solution architecture, discovery workshops, and estimate preparation.
• Support sales and marketing in positioning our Shopify capabilities through presentations, demos, and case studies.
• Build and maintain relationships with the Shopify Partner team and other third-party vendors.
• Contribute to research and development for new capabilities and integrations, ensuring the team remains competitive in the Shopify ecosystem.
Required Experience & Skills
• 5+ years of experience delivering on Shopify Plus, with additional experience in enterprise e-commerce solutions.
• Proven leadership experience managing distributed technical teams and delivering complex, enterprise-grade projects.
• Advanced expertise in Liquid, Shopify APIs (REST & GraphQL), app integrations, and data model best practices.
• Strong technical background in JavaScript, Node.js, React.js (Vue.js a plus), with experience in frameworks such as Next.js and Remix.
• Back-end experience with Node.js and Ruby on Rails (PHP a plus).
• Experience with Shopify theme development, Checkout Extensibility, and multi-store/multi-tenant solutions.
• Deep understanding of version control, testing, deployment pipelines, and release management best practices.
• Hands-on experience with ecommerce integrations across products, inventory, orders, customers, and subscriptions.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field or equivalent experience.
